I realize it is somewhat unfair to place people in categories. Now that that is out of the way, I have found that most people fit into one of four categories. Some are Doers. Others are Thinkers. A few are Thinker/Doers and far too many are Neither. Let’s take them one at a time (not necessarily in that order).

For those who have not been following my blog at the prior web location, let me summarize a list of topics I will try to cover over time. Albeit, this is not an all encompassing list and I welcome topic suggestions.

As I write this, I am sitting in traffic court waiting for my turn to present my case. They say every story has two sides. I would guess that is why the officer who pulled me over is seated across the room waiting for his turn. I just hope the judge likes my story more than his. We shall see.
Appraisers are really good at finding comps, measuring and drawing houses, evaluating a property's highest and best use, analyzing the market, extracting and applying adjustments, driving to comps, and communicating final results. We have a big skill set! But what are we not always good at? Actively managing our businesses.
Recently, there have been many discussions regarding the next generation of appraisers. Where will they come from? Will our profession be extinct? Professional appraisers in the valuation industry are a necessity. Without appraisers who are valuation professionals? Realtors will be providing valuations services. We must remind ourselves that Realtors serve a very separate and distinct service in which they are marketing professionals that are most times advocate for the property or client. An independent opinion of value is necessary.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Appraisal Institute, "trainee hiring will remain relatively weak for the next one- to two-years." Um, I hate to disagree with the results of what I am sure is a credible survey, but this is just a gross underestimation. One-to two-years? How about FOREVER unless something drastically changes in our industry?
