TITLE: Appraisal Training and Compliance Manager
COMPANY: US Bank
Jennifer brings 10+ years of experience as an independent appraiser and as appraisal reviewer to her position as Appraisal Training Manager with Collateral Risk Management at U.S. Bank in Minneapolis, MN. Jennifer likes to balance work with family, athletics, fishing, and volunteering for organizations to include Multiple Sclerosis reasearch, youth guidance, and military support.
BUZZ: Why did you become an appraiser?
Jenny: I ask myself this same question sometimes…But I was doing some office work for an appraisal company and the more I became familiar with the appraisal process, the more I wanted to learn. I thought it was something I could get into and be good at.
BUZZ: What piece of advice would you offer young people considering a career in this profession?
Jenny: It is not easy. There are ups and downs, good times and bad. The beginning is about patience and dedication. Associate yourself with and learn from the right people!
BUZZ: Can you share a funny or unique story about an appraisal you've done?
Jenny: I appraised a home where the homeowner was running late and gave me the garage code to go in. Over the course of conversations, we had talked on her prize bird. When I got in to the home I was smart enough to stick my finger in the bird cage. The bird latched on to my finger and wouldn't let go. I panicked. I had a pencil in my hand and bad thoughts. I could picture the homeowner coming in to me shaking the bird around in the cage to release it from my finger….or resorting to the pencil. The bird finally let go. It was a painful experience physically and mentally. I have issue with birds to this day. **** No birds were hurt in the development of this appraisal. ****
BUZZ: What book would we find on your nightstand right now?
Jenny: Oh…of course a worn copy of USPAP and the Interagency Appraisal Guidelines. Or, possibly a mystery novel.
BUZZ: Tell us something about yourself that people might not know.
Jenny: I played hockey. I have bungee jumped. Hallmark commercials make me emotional…although no one has ever seen it.
BUZZ: When not at work, you are most likely…
Jenny: Occupied! Weather depending…softball, volleyball, bowling, or fishing at the family cabin. Spending time with the family in general. A nice deck or patio with a margarita isn't such a bad idea either.
BUZZ: What is your biggest Pet Peeve?
Jenny: When people do not hold the door for someone, or remember to say thank you.
BUZZ: What is the best thing about your job?
Jenny: It's a tie. I get to meet all kinds of wonderful people along the way and US Bank has given me the opportunity to do something I believe in.
BUZZ: If you could have any pet in the world but you had to have 500 of that pet what kind would you get? Why?
Jenny: Dogs. There is nothing better. However I would like to add a disclaimer that there would be no puppy mills or dog fighting. They would have to come with 500 caretakers.
BUZZ: If you could change one thing about the appraisal industry today, what would it be?
Jenny: The appraisal industry. There are a lot of good people doing good things. It is too bad we all can't be on a similar page. There are more appropriate professions out there for the criminally minded. If I could, I would grant everyone complete confidence and independence.
BUZZ: What is your favorite sport to play? To watch? Why?
Jenny: There is not much I don't like to play or watch. A live event is great regardless of the sport. Hockey for action. Football because I have a slight addiction to Fantasy Football. And off the cuff… horseracing.
BUZZ: Thanks for your time Jenny
